Union Home Secretary Lauds CRPF’s Role in Stabilizing Manipur

New Delhi, July 28, 2024 — Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, during the 86th Raising Day celebrations of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), highlighted the force’s crucial role in restoring peace and order in Manipur amidst prolonged ethnic violence. Bhalla commended the CRPF for its effective measures in curbing violence and safeguarding shelter homes for the displaced.

“CRPF’s involvement in Manipur is expanding. They have significantly contributed to stopping violence in the state and ensuring the safety of shelter homes for the displaced,” Bhalla said.

Since May 3, 2023, Manipur has been plagued by ethnic clashes between the tribal Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, resulting in at least 221 deaths and displacing over 60,000 people. To quell the unrest, around 36,000 personnel from the Indian Army and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed in the state.

Bhalla also discussed future challenges and the integration of “experienced and disciplined” Agniveers into the CAPFs, with each force reserving 10 percent of its vacancies for these recruits.

“Only a few districts remain affected by Naxalism. With continued support, we are confident that Naxalism will be eradicated from India,” Bhalla added.
