Assam Expands Ration Card Access for Migrant Workers Registered on e-Shram Portal
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that migrant workers registered on the e-Shram portal between 2021 and 2023 can now apply for new ration cards or update existing ones. The application deadline is August 3, 2024.
This move follows a Supreme Court directive requiring states and Union Territories to issue ration cards to 8 crore migrant workers listed on the e-Shram portal, which has 286 million registrants, including 206.3 million with existing ration card data.
During Anna Sewa Din earlier this month, Assam distributed over 13,000 metric tons of food grains to approximately 6.5 lakh ration card holders across the state. Key distribution highlights include:
- West Karbi Anglong: 4.29% of allocation to 2,066 ration card holders.
- Tamulpur: 4,042 beneficiaries, 4.67% of allotment.
- Hojai and Golaghat: 6,695 and 13,372 ration card holders, with Golaghat achieving a distribution percentage of 5.89%.
- South Salmara and Goalpara: Distributed 6.49% and 6.63% of their allocations.
- Karimganj and Cachar: Distributed 6.99% and 7.30% to 15,768 and 23,961 ration card holders, respectively.
- Kamrup Metro: 8.35% distribution to 13,183 ration card holders.
- Dima Hasao and Dhubri: Exceeded 8% distribution.
- Tinsukia: Distributed 19.42% of its allotment to 54,030 ration card holders, the highest percentage and number.
This initiative aims to enhance food security for migrant workers and highlights the state’s commitment to effective welfare schemes.
