Wild Elephant Found Dead at Nagaon-Karbi Anglong Border Sparks Investigation
Nagaon, July 29, 2024 — A wild male elephant was discovered deceased near Shilphata No. 1 on the Nagaon-Karbi Anglong border. The elephant, found close to a local bar, exhibited visible injuries and an unusually swollen front left thigh. It is estimated that the elephant died the previous night.
Residents reported that the elephant had been roaming the area for the past week. Initial suspicions from the forest department point towards possible internal conflicts within the elephant’s herd as a potential cause of death. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to ascertain the exact cause of death, and a thorough investigation will follow.
This incident follows a recent case involving the Golaghat Police, who earlier this month arrested two officials from Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) Township. Chief Manager Ujjal Nayan Handique and Senior Manager Bedanga Kashyap were accused of covering up the death of a female elephant, electrocuted and later buried near Kaziranga National Park. This case has drawn significant criticism from conservationists.
