Tragic Landslide in Tamenglong Results in Two Deaths, One Injury
Tamenglong, July 30, 2024 — A landslide in Dimthanlong village, Tamenglong Ward No. 3, has tragically resulted in the deaths of a mother and her child, with one individual critically injured. The incident, which occurred late last night, has prompted an urgent response from local authorities.
The injured individual, identified as Ringsinlung Kahmei, is receiving critical medical treatment. Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed his condolences through social media, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a mother and her child in the landslide in Dimthanlong village. Our hearts are with the bereaved family and Mr. Ringsinlung Kahmei, who is currently receiving emergency care. We are ensuring he gets the necessary medical support.”
The landslide tragedy has intensified political debates surrounding the Union Budget’s allocation for Manipur. Chief Minister Singh defended the state’s budgetary provisions amid criticism from opposition leaders. Singh highlighted that Manipur had received over Rs 250 crore for hailstorms and floods, asserting that these funds have been allocated to aid those affected.
Opposition figures, including Lok Sabha MP Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, have criticized the Union Budget 2024 for inadequately addressing flood relief and the needs of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Manipur. Dr. Akoijam condemned the budget as neglectful, stating, “Manipur’s needs have been ignored, with no provisions for flood relief or IDP rehabilitation.”
The ongoing debate reflects the broader challenges faced by Manipur as it grapples with immediate natural disasters and the political dimensions of disaster relief and recovery.
