Meghalaya Education Minister Calls for Humanitarian Aid for Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Communities from Bangladesh

Shillong – Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma has urged the state government to prepare for the potential arrival of Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities from Bangladesh, stressing that any support should be grounded in humanitarian concerns.

In a recent press briefing, Sangma emphasized the need to address the situation with a focus on humanitarian principles rather than religious affiliations. “Our approach should be humanitarian. It’s about assisting the indigenous populations, regardless of their religion,” Sangma said.

He expressed apprehension about future uncertainties and the possibility that members of these communities might seek refuge in India, especially in states neighboring Bangladesh. “The future is uncertain, and we must be prepared for any eventuality,” he added.

Sangma highlighted that while the state of Meghalaya should consider possible responses to such scenarios, the final decision on providing humanitarian aid will be made by the Government of India. “The state must look into the possibilities, but the ultimate decision will be made at the national level,” he stated.

The minister also underscored that assistance should be based on need rather than religious identity. “The Khasis and Jaintias include both Christians and non-Christians, and the Garos are diverse in their religious affiliations. It is crucial that our aid is not influenced by religious considerations,” Sangma clarified.

He warned that decisions driven by religious biases could affect the willingness to assist these communities, affirming the Meghalaya government’s commitment to supporting those with ties to the state. “Regardless of their location, the ongoing situation will impact these communities, and we are prepared to offer help as needed,” Sangma concluded.
