HSPDP Calls for Resumption of Border Talks with Assam to Resolve Remaining Disputes
The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has urged the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government to restart the second phase of border negotiations with Assam to resolve lingering disputes.
In a recent letter to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, HSPDP President KP Pangniang emphasized the urgency of addressing the remaining six sectors of the interstate boundary issue. Although significant progress was made in 2022 when six sectors were settled, the second phase of discussions has yet to commence.
Pangniang praised the MDA government’s efforts so far and called for an immediate resumption of talks. He noted that Chief Minister Sangma has committed to engaging with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma before the state Assembly’s upcoming autumn session.
Both Meghalaya and Assam have set up regional committees to facilitate these discussions. Meghalaya Minister Paul Lyngdoh has also reaffirmed the state’s claim over 54 villages in the Langpih sector, managed by the West Khasi Hills regional committee, with necessary documentation to be submitted to Assam soon.
