Kokrajhar Marks 24th Martyr’s Day of Bineshwar Brahma with Tribute and Financial Support

Kokrajhar, August 19, 2024 — The 24th Martyr’s Day of Subungthini Thandwi Bineshwar Brahma, the influential former president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) and a key advocate for the inclusion of the Bodo language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, was commemorated in Kokrajhar on Monday. The day-long observance included various programs at Brahma’s memorial site in Chandamari, organized jointly by the Bodo Sahitya Sabha and the Bineshwar Brahma Trust.

Brahma, who was tragically assassinated at his home in Bhetapara, Guwahati, in 2000, is remembered for his pivotal role in advancing the Bodo language and script. The event was marked by a tribute to his legacy, with leaders and community members reflecting on his significant contributions.

Nilakanta Gayari, General Secretary of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, highlighted Brahma’s enduring impact on the Bodo language and literature, affirming that his legacy will always be honored with deep respect by the Bodo community.

Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), praised Brahma’s leadership and unwavering dedication during difficult times. Boro announced a financial contribution of two crore rupees from the BTR government to support the Bineshwar Brahma Trust, recognizing Brahma’s profound influence on the region’s cultural heritage.

The commemoration was attended by notable figures including Assam Cabinet Minister UG Brahma, MLA Lawrence Islary, Bodo Sahitya Sabha President Dr. Suruth Narzary, and ABSU President Dipen Boro, all of whom paid their respects to the late leader.
