Tripura Government Enforces Vehicle Restrictions on NH-08 Amid Severe Flood Damage
The Tripura government has imposed vehicle restrictions on National Highway 08 (NH-08) due to extensive damage caused by severe flooding and heavy rainfall since August 19. Key affected areas include a crucial stretch of NH-08 in the Khowai district and embankments along the Katakhal and Howrah rivers in the West District.
The highway, a vital link between Tripura and mainland India, has developed significant cracks, some up to 9 feet wide, near the 47-mile mark. Khowai District Magistrate Chandni Chandran has issued a directive imposing traffic restrictions on this stretch until repairs are completed. The order, made under sections 34 and 26(2) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, highlights the severe safety risks and mandates compliance to avoid penalties under Section 51 of the Act.
Additionally, West District Magistrate Vishal Kumar has prohibited heavy motor vehicles from traveling on the embankments of the Katakhal and Howrah rivers until August 30. This restriction, also enforced under the Disaster Management Act, allows the police to seize any vehicles that breach the directive.
These restrictions aim to ensure public safety and protect infrastructure amidst the ongoing flood crisis in Tripura.
