Chirang Incident of Sexual Assault on Minors Raises Alarm Over Safety in Assam
Chirang, August 24 — A fresh incident of sexual assault on two minors in Chirang has sent shockwaves across Assam, amplifying concerns about the safety of women and children in the region. The crime took place in Mozabari village under Sidli police jurisdiction, where Jahiruddin, a married man, stands accused of deceiving and assaulting two young girls from the Koch Rajbongshi and a religious minority community.
Local reports indicate that Jahiruddin allegedly lured the minors into his home on August 20 with false promises of employment. Once inside, the girls were subjected to a horrifying ordeal of sexual assault. The crime came to light when the victims’ families filed a formal complaint with Sidli police station, triggering an immediate investigation.
In response to the complaint, Sidli police initiated a manhunt for Jahiruddin, who is currently evading arrest. Senior police officials are actively leading the search operations, focusing on Jahiruddin’s residence and surrounding areas to ensure his swift capture.
A resident of Mozabari claimed that Jahiruddin had initially promised the minors job opportunities in Hyderabad, with the intent to traffic them. The situation escalated when Jahiruddin attempted to transport the girls to an accomplice’s house. However, the quick intervention of locals thwarted the attempt, rescuing the minors and reuniting them with their families.
The community has expressed both relief and gratitude for the police’s prompt action but also voiced strong demands for stricter measures against human trafficking and crimes targeting vulnerable individuals. This incident has sparked widespread outrage, with citizens calling on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to implement stronger protections for women and children and to address the growing concerns over safety in the state.
As the investigation continues, the authorities are under increased pressure to bring the perpetrator to justice and prevent similar incidents in the future.
