Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Endorses Modi’s Call for Swift Justice in Crimes Against Women

Assam, August 26, 2024 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed robust support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advocacy for stricter legal measures to address the rising incidence of crimes against women. During a press briefing at Union Minister Sanjay Seth’s residence in Ranchi, Sarma backed Modi’s proposal for expedited justice, suggesting that the entire legal process for such cases—from investigation to conviction—should be completed within six months.

Sarma highlighted the escalating frequency of these crimes and praised Modi’s push for stringent laws. “Crimes against women are on the rise. I welcome the PM’s announcement that a strict law is needed,” Sarma stated, underscoring the importance of a swift judicial process to ensure timely justice.

This endorsement comes in the wake of a recent high-profile case involving the rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Hospital in Kolkata, which has ignited nationwide outrage. Sarma has committed to presenting these recommendations to the central government to advocate for new legislation.

Additionally, Sarma discussed the potential political implications of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He indicated support for Soren’s inclusion, suggesting it could enhance the BJP’s standing in Jharkhand and plans to explore this further during his upcoming visit to Delhi.

Prime Minister Modi, addressing a recent gathering in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, condemned crimes against women as “unpardonable sins” and reiterated that ensuring women’s safety is a top national priority.
