Assam Enhances Education System by Making 23,956 Contractual Teachers Permanent
Guwahati: In a landmark move to boost its education sector, the Assam government has officially converted 23,956 contractual teaching positions into permanent roles as of September 2. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma distributed the permanent appointment letters during a special ceremony, marking a key milestone in the state’s educational reforms.
Previously working under contractual agreements through the Samagra Shiksha initiative, these teachers have now been granted permanent status across both upper and lower primary schools. The event, held in Guwahati, was also attended by Assam’s Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu, who was honored as the guest of the day.
Chief Minister Sarma highlighted this achievement on X (formerly Twitter), celebrating it as a fulfillment of the government’s pledge to create 1 lakh jobs. He also announced plans to generate an additional 50,000 positions by May 2025, with a goal of reaching a total of 2 lakh jobs.
Describing the job creation as a “historic leap toward transparency and merit-based recruitment,” Sarma’s office emphasized that this step reflects the Assam Government’s commitment to fair and inclusive hiring practices. The initiative also encompasses job allocations in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, reinforcing the government’s dedication to equitable development throughout the state.
