Congress MP Bimol Akoijam Condemns Central Government for Inaction Amid Manipur Violence
Congress MP Bimol Akoijam has delivered a fierce rebuke of the central government, accusing it of failing to prevent the escalating violence in Manipur. His criticism follows a recent surge in violence, including drone attacks on residential areas, which has further destabilized the state.
Akoijam questioned the government’s accountability, demanding to know who would be held responsible for the loss of lives and widespread destruction. He pointed to the Manipur state government’s assertion that its actions during the 15-month crisis had the backing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Akoijam accused the central leadership of having “blood on their hands” and cautioned that the conflict in Manipur is far from resolution.
His statements come in the wake of a violent attack by suspected Kuki militants on Koutruk village in Imphal West on September 1. The assault, which involved the use of drones, bombs, and advanced weaponry, resulted in the deaths of two people, including a woman, and left several others injured.
The Manipur government condemned the attack, labeling it an act of terror intended to disrupt ongoing peace efforts. The government emphasized the tragic timing of the assault, occurring just as significant strides were being made to restore calm in the region. This latest outbreak of violence has heightened fears of further unrest in Manipur, casting doubt on the effectiveness of current peace initiatives.
