Arunachal MP Tapir Gao Calls for Return of 17th Karmapa to India
Dharamshala, September 6, 2024 — Tapir Gao, Member of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh, has advocated for the return of the 17th Karmapa, Urgyen Trinley Dorjee, to India, emphasizing its significance for the future of Buddhism and Tibetan communities in the country.
Gao, alongside Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and other state officials, visited the Gyuto Tantric Monastery in Dharamshala on Thursday. They underscored the importance of the Karmapa’s leadership within the Karma Kagyu lineage and expressed a strong desire for his return.
The 17th Karmapa, who departed India in 2017, currently holds citizenship in the Dominican Republic. His return has faced obstacles, including a rejected visa application in 2018.
Gao expressed hope that these issues could be resolved, stating, “I am hopeful for his swift return to India and Dharamshala. His presence is vital for the welfare of Buddhism and the Tibetan community here.”
This call for his return follows a recent meeting between the Karmapa and the Dalai Lama in Zurich, which has reignited discussions about his potential return. The Gyuto Monastery’s administration, led by Lobsang Dorjee, also supports the push for the Karmapa’s homecoming.
