IIT Guwahati Student Found Dead in Hostel Room, Second Suicide in a Month

A third-year B. Tech Computer Science student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, Bimlesh Kumar, was found dead in his hostel room at Brahmaputra Hostel on Monday morning. The 21-year-old student from Uttar Pradesh was reportedly found unresponsive and is suspected to have died by suicide.

The body has been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death. The reasons behind Kumar’s apparent suicide remain unclear, and investigations are ongoing.

This incident follows another tragic event at IIT Guwahati earlier this month, when Saumya, an M. Tech student also from Uttar Pradesh, was found dead in her Disang Hostel room on August 9. Both cases have raised significant concerns about student mental health and the adequacy of support systems at the institute.

In response to these incidents, there have been calls for enhanced counseling services and mental health support for students. Police are collaborating with IIT Guwahati authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into both cases.
