Mizoram Reports Over 900 Suicides in the Past Decade, Highlighting Urgent Need for Mental Health Support
Mizoram’s Aizawl Superintendent of Police Rahool Alwal has disclosed a troubling statistic: over 900 individuals, including 154 women, have died by suicide in the state over the past decade.
- Statistics: From 2014 to July 2024, a total of 948 suicides were reported, with 84% of victims being men and 16% women.
- Age Distribution: The highest incidence of suicides was among individuals aged 20-39 (584 people), followed by the 40-59 age group (201 people). Suicides among the 1-19 age group totaled 117, and those aged 60 and above numbered 40.
- Current Year: In 2024, there have already been 49 reported suicides.
This data was presented during the World Suicide Prevention Day observance in Aizawl on September 10, underscoring the need for enhanced mental health support and prevention strategies.
