Manipur MLA Announces Replacement of Assam Rifles Units Amidst Protests
Imphal, Manipur: Manipur MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh has announced the replacement of two Assam Rifles units with other central forces in Manipur, a move reportedly welcomed by many in the state. Singh shared the news via his X handle, emphasizing that this change aims to bring enhanced peace and stability to the region. The decision was taken in response to the desires of the local populace, with the central government ensuring a more stringent approach to address ongoing violence.
However, this announcement has sparked protests. On September 11, hundreds of Kuki-Zo women staged a demonstration in front of the 22 Assam Rifles Post in Kangpokpi Town, blocking the planned withdrawal of the paramilitary forces. The protest followed a public meeting on September 9, where the Kuki-Zo community decided to seal all Assam Rifles camps in Kangpokpi district if the Centre did not reconsider replacing the Assam Rifles with the CRPF. The women gathered at the post after learning of the imminent withdrawal of the Assam Rifles personnel.
