Government Steps Up Efforts to Resolve Manipur Crisis, Fencing Project Underway

The Indian government is intensifying its efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis in Manipur, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiling a comprehensive roadmap to address the complex issue. Speaking at a press conference marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 100 days in office, Shah emphasized the racial nature of the conflict and stressed the importance of dialogue between the Kuki and Meitei groups.

Shah revealed that the government is actively engaging with both communities, highlighting recent progress in reducing violence. “Recently, violence went on for three days, other than that, in the last 3 months, no major incident took place,” he noted. This development indicates a positive shift towards peace, and the government aims to build upon this momentum.

The India-Myanmar border has been identified as a critical factor in the unrest. To address this, the government has initiated a fencing project along the 1,500-kilometer border. Shah announced that 30 kilometers of the border have already been fenced, with funding approved to complete the entire project.

In addition to the fencing project, the government has implemented other key measures to address the crisis. These include the strategic deployment of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) units to maintain law and order, and the nullification of an agreement allowing free movement between India and Myanmar. Entry into India is now permitted only by visa, aimed at curbing infiltration.

To address immediate concerns, the government plans to expand access to essential commodities through Kendriya Police Kalyan Bhandars. Shah revealed that 16 new facilities will be added to the existing 21, with half of the new centers located in hill areas. This move aims to alleviate the hardships faced by local communities.

As the situation continues to unfold, the effectiveness of these measures will be closely watched. The government’s efforts demonstrate a commitment to resolving the Manipur crisis and ensuring long-term stability in the region.
