BRO Restores Crucial Road Link to China Border with New Bailey Bridge in Sikkim
Mangan, Sikkim: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully completed the construction of a new bailey bridge at Zeema in Mangan district, reestablishing vital road connectivity to the China border via the Lachen Valley. This strategic infrastructure project was officially announced on September 17.
The previous bailey bridge, essential for regional transportation and logistics, was severely damaged by flash floods in the Lachen Chu river on May 29, 2023. The destruction had caused significant disruptions for both local residents and military personnel stationed near the border.
BRO initiated the construction of the new bridge under Project Swastik on August 24, and the project was finished remarkably swiftly, with the bridge opening on September 16. The rapid completion of the bridge has been celebrated as a notable achievement.
The newly constructed bridge is crucial for the logistical support of the armed forces and local communities, who rely on it for essential transportation. It is also anticipated to revitalize tourism in North Sikkim by reconnecting the Gurdongmarg Lake, a popular tourist destination that had been inaccessible since October 2023.
This development is set to enhance transportation efficiency and overall connectivity in the region, providing a significant boost to both military operations and local economic activities.
