Meghalaya Launches ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ 2024 Campaign on Swachh Bharat Mission’s 10th Anniversary
Shillong, Meghalaya: Marking a decade of the Swachh Bharat Mission, Meghalaya has inaugurated the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ (SHS) 2024 campaign. Launched on September 17 and running through October 2, this fortnight-long initiative aims to renew statewide efforts toward enhancing cleanliness and public hygiene.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar emphasized the pivotal role of public involvement in the campaign’s success. “Maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility,” Dhar said. He also introduced significant urban development projects, including a ₹5.8 crore renovation of footpaths in Iew Duh and a ₹15 crore upgrade for the traditional market, which align with the mission’s broader goal of improving public health and safety.
Additionally, Dhar outlined a five-year vision to position Meghalaya as a premier tourist destination, with cleanliness as a cornerstone of this aspiration.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah called for increased citizen engagement and respect for sanitation workers. She reported that 67 of the 70 government-provided e-vehicles for waste collection are now in use, enhancing waste management efficiency.
The launch event included administering the Swachhata pledge and highlighted three main activity areas: Cleanliness Target Units, public participation efforts, and health checkups for sanitation workers. JP Lakiang, Mission Director of Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen, underscored the mission’s role in not just improving sanitation but also in reshaping societal values.
The campaign saw participation from government officials, students, NCC cadets, village leaders, and self-help groups, demonstrating its broad appeal and community-focused approach.
