Assam Chief Minister Calls for Dialogue with Armed Groups on International Day of Peace

On the International Day of Peace, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a heartfelt appeal to armed groups in the state, urging them to abandon violence and engage in meaningful dialogue. In a message shared on social media platform X, Sarma emphasized that constructive discussions are essential for Assam’s development and harmony.

“On #InternationalDayOfPeace 🕊, I invite armed groups to join the conversation and help shape a brighter future for Assam. Violence only breeds more violence; collaboration is key to our progress,” CM Sarma stated.

This appeal is part of ongoing efforts to address the longstanding insurgencies in Assam. Sarma has been a vocal advocate for peace talks, particularly with the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent), commonly known as ULFA(I). While the influence of ULFA(I) has diminished significantly, approximately 400 of its members are still believed to be active in Myanmar.

Sarma acknowledged that while he maintains occasional communication with ULFA(I) leader Paresh Barua, negotiations have been hindered by Barua’s insistence on sovereignty, a demand Sarma described as “non-negotiable.” Despite these challenges, the Chief Minister remains optimistic that continued dialogue could pave the way for enduring peace in Assam.
