Rising Tensions in Kamrup Over Alleged Beef Incident at Carmel School
Tensions flared outside Carmel School in Andherijuli, Kamrup district, following allegations that two students from Manipur served beef to their Hindu classmates during a tiffin break. The incident, which occurred on September 19, has ignited strong religious sentiments and led to protests that disrupted the ongoing half-yearly exams.
Hundreds of local residents and guardians gathered outside the school demanding immediate action against the two Class 8 students accused of the offense. Protesters expressed outrage over what they perceived as the school administration’s insufficient response to the allegations.
A formal complaint, signed by 69 guardians, was lodged with the Palashbari Revenue Circle‘s Circle Officer, outlining the accusations against the students. Frustrations mounted when the school’s principal was reported to have downplayed the severity of the situation, further fueling the protests.
DSP Kamrup (Rural) Rajiv Kumar Saikia confirmed that a case had been registered and an investigation was underway. However, demonstrators claimed that the school had not implemented any corrective measures, leading to an escalation of the protests.
In response to the unrest, local authorities, including police and a magistrate, were dispatched to the scene to defuse tensions and assured the community of a thorough investigation. As of now, no formal charges have been filed, but the situation remains under close scrutiny by law enforcement and school officials.
