Arunachal Pradesh Enhances Conservation Efforts with Eco-Sensitive Zone Designations for Namdapha and Kamlang Reserves
In a significant move towards environmental protection, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has designated the Namdapha National Park & Tiger Reserve and the Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary & Tiger Reserve as Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZ). This announcement underscores the commitment to preserving the rich biodiversity and ecological significance of these regions, located in the Changlang and Lohit districts, respectively.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu celebrated the declaration on the social media platform X, stating, “Pleased to announce that Namdapha National Park & Tiger Reserve and Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary & Tiger Reserve have been designated as Eco-Sensitive Zones. This recognition is a step forward in protecting our natural heritage.”
Highlighting the continued efforts in conservation, CM Khandu noted that this latest designation follows the Pakke Tiger Reserve’s designation as an ESZ in February 2024. “This declaration not only promotes the conservation of endangered wildlife and unique flora but also emphasizes the need for a balanced ecosystem in Arunachal Pradesh,” he added.
According to the National Environment Policy (2006), Eco-Sensitive Zones are crucial for safeguarding areas that hold significant environmental resources. The designation aims to protect these ecosystems from the adverse impacts of human activities and climate change, ensuring their integrity and sustainability for future generations.
The recognition of Namdapha and Kamlang as ESZs is anticipated to strengthen conservation initiatives for endangered species and support biodiversity in these areas. This strategic move aligns with Arunachal Pradesh’s ongoing commitment to preserving its rich ecological landscape and fostering environmental sustainability.
