Meghalaya Chief Minister Assesses Flash Flood Impact, Announces Aid for Victims

Shillong, October 5, 2024 – In response to the devastating flash floods and landslides affecting the South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills districts, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma convened an emergency meeting today to review ongoing relief operations. The region has experienced relentless rainfall since midnight, leading to significant destruction, particularly in Dalu, where critical infrastructure has been compromised.

During the meeting, CM Sangma announced an ex-gratia payment for the families of three victims who lost their lives in Dalu due to the calamity. Additionally, seven individuals were confirmed dead following a landslide in Hatiasia Songma village within the Gasuapara police station jurisdiction.

To bolster relief efforts, the Chief Minister directed district authorities to coordinate with state agencies for support. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to conduct search and rescue missions in the most affected areas. The ongoing landslides have severely disrupted road access between Dalu and Baghmara, prompting CM Sangma to urge officials to explore alternative routes for restoring connectivity.

In light of the infrastructure damage, particularly to bridges, the Chief Minister recommended the installation of Bailey bridges, a rapid-response modular bridge system ideal for emergencies. He also noted that all wooden bridges statewide have been earmarked for replacement with sturdier alternatives.

Efforts are underway to restore electricity in flood-stricken areas, with power expected to be reinstated by the end of the day, helping alleviate public distress and supporting the relief operations.

CM Sangma called on the administration and relevant officials to remain vigilant and continuously assess the situation to ensure an effective and prompt disaster response.
