Sikkim Chief Minister Honors Legacy of Nar Bahadur Bhandari on His Birth Anniversary
Gangtok, October 5, 2024 – Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang paid tribute to former Chief Minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari on the occasion of his birth anniversary, recognizing his significant contributions to Sikkim’s development. Born on October 5, 1940, Bhandari served as the state’s second Chief Minister from 1979 to 1994 and played a pivotal role in shaping Sikkim’s identity and progress.
In a moving Facebook post, CM Tamang highlighted Bhandari’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people and his visionary leadership. One of his notable accomplishments was the successful push for the Nepali language’s inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, a landmark decision that empowered the Nepali-speaking community and celebrated their cultural heritage.
Tamang stated, “Our government observes ‘Shri Bhandari Jayanti’ to honor his enduring legacy.” He also announced the initiation of the Nar Bahadur Bhandari Fellowship Scheme, aimed at providing outstanding students from Sikkim with the opportunity to pursue higher education at prestigious universities worldwide.
