Sikkim Chief Minister Honors Legacy of Nar Bahadur Bhandari on His Birth Anniversary

Gangtok, October 5, 2024 – On the occasion of former Chief Minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari’s birth anniversary, Sikkim’s current Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang led a commemorative event at Samman Bhawan. The gathering included prominent figures such as Deputy Speaker Madame Krishna Rai, the Mayor, Councillors, Additional Chief Secretary, and various MLAs and Ministers, all paying tribute to Bhandari’s significant contributions to the state.

Bhandari, who held office from 1979 to 1994, is particularly remembered for his pivotal role in securing the Nepali language’s inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This achievement has been crucial in protecting the linguistic rights of the Nepali-speaking community in Sikkim and enhancing their cultural identity on a national stage.

During the ceremony, attendees laid floral tributes to honor Bhandari’s legacy. CM Tamang expressed deep respect for Bhandari’s vision, stating, “His foresight not only advanced Sikkim’s development but also strengthened the state’s cultural identity.” He highlighted Bhandari’s efforts in fostering unity within the Gorkha community and promoting the Nepali language, which earned him the Jagadamba Shree Purasakar.

Bhandari’s influence as the founding leader of the Sikkim Sangram Parishad and as a key architect of the state’s development continues to resonate with the people of Sikkim. The ceremony underscored his enduring legacy, as leaders and citizens alike gathered to honor his memory and contributions.
