Thirteen Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for 1996 Murders in Bilasipara

In a landmark ruling, Additional District and Sessions Judge Farhana Sultana sentenced thirteen individuals to life imprisonment, each accompanied by a fine, for their involvement in the brutal murders of Sayed Ali, Moynal Hoque, and Asur Uddin in Dhubri district’s Boalkamri area of Bilasipara sub-division.

The prosecution, led by Tapan Kumar Bhattacharya, presented a case dating back to December 23, 1996, when victim Sukur Ali lodged a First Information Report (FIR) at Bilasipara police station detailing the events surrounding the murders. The accused—Abbas Ali, Ali Hussain, Abu Bakkar Siddique, Younus Ali, Insaf Ali, Naushad Ali, Sahid Ali, Golap Nabi, Hazrat Ali, Alam Sheikh, Moslem Uddin, Khaybar Ali, and Sadek Ali—were found guilty of mercilessly taking the lives of the three men.

According to the FIR, on the morning of the incident, Majid Ali was ploughing land belonging to his brother, Jobbar Ali, when the accused trespassed and attacked him with sharp weapons. In a heroic attempt to rescue Majid, Sayed Ali, Moynal Hoque, and Asur Uddin tragically lost their lives.

The case, registered as Bilasipara P.S. Case No. 190/1996 under Sections 149, 302, and 326 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), was meticulously investigated, leading to the trial under Sessions Case No. 108/2001.

On October 7, the judge delivered the verdict, which was met with relief and satisfaction by the victims’ families, who had awaited justice for over two decades. This successful conclusion of legal proceedings not only marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice but also serves as a stern warning against violence and criminality in the region.
