A dispute has arisen in Guwahati after the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) removed a signboard, triggering tensions over the renaming of a local area. The issue centers around a section known as Lakhimijan, which some residents claim was unofficially renamed Miajaan.
The controversy began when the Dakshin Janakpur Nagarik Samity filed a complaint, alleging that a group of individuals had conspired to rename Lakhimijan to Miajaan. In response, the GMC took down the signboard on Tuesday, although locals assert that the area has long been called Miajaan, named after a man named Miajaan Ali. According to residents, the signboard removed by the GMC had originally been installed by the corporation itself.
Previously, the Janakpur civic body raised concerns with the GMC Mayor, through the Councillor of Ward No-41, over the renaming. They highlighted that Lakhimijan, a small water diversion from the Bahini River, plays an important role as a major drain for localities like Beltola and Lakhimi Nagar. The confusion, however, arose when the watercourse near Sijubari Panchali was informally renamed Miajaan by some residents, leading to complications for local agencies and administrators.
The Janakpur civic body urged the GMC to intervene and officially address the naming issue, emphasizing the need for clear communication to prevent further misunderstandings or administrative complications. The GMC has yet to release an official statement, and the controversy remains unresolved, with further action expected.
