Search Intensifies for Missing Dibrugarh BJP Leader Amid Speculations of Rebel Ties
In a troubling development from Upper Assam, Likhan Baruah, a local BJP leader and former president of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), has been missing for nearly ten days, according to his family. Baruah, who resides in the Rohmoria area of the Lahowal constituency in Dibrugarh, was last seen at his home approximately a week and a half ago, prompting concerns for his safety.
The circumstances surrounding his disappearance have led to mounting speculation that he may have joined the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent), commonly known as ULFA-I, a proscribed rebel organization. However, police and security agencies have yet to confirm any direct links between Baruah and the militant group.
In a concerning turn of events, Baruah reportedly left behind a four-page letter addressed to his mother prior to his disappearance, adding an emotional layer to the already distressing situation. Family members are understandably anxious and are urging authorities to expedite the search and investigation.
Baruah’s political journey has been noteworthy; he contested the 2021 Assam Assembly elections representing the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) but was unsuccessful in his bid. He later transitioned to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), seeking to continue his political career within a different framework.
Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Rakesh Reddy confirmed that an official complaint regarding Baruah’s disappearance has been lodged, and an investigation has been initiated. “At this preliminary stage, we cannot provide any definitive information regarding his whereabouts or the circumstances of his disappearance,” Reddy stated.
Authorities are actively conducting search operations and interviews in the hope of uncovering clues that may lead to Baruah’s location. The situation has raised alarms in the local community, and residents are hopeful for a swift resolution to the case.
