BSF Intercepts Apple Smuggling Attempt on Meghalaya-Bangladesh Border
In a notable operation on October 18, 2024, troops from the Border Security Force (BSF) in the Meghalaya Frontier successfully intercepted two Indian nationals attempting to smuggle a substantial consignment of apples into Bangladesh. The interception took place near the international border in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.
Acting on credible intelligence, personnel from the 4th Battalion of the BSF set up a strategic checkpoint along the Dawki-Lynkhat road in the Pyrdwah border area. Here, they halted two vehicles—a Maruti Alto and a Maruti Van—that were suspiciously loaded with 40 boxes of apples destined for illegal transportation across the border.
Upon further questioning, the drivers of the vehicles were unable to present any valid documentation or satisfactory explanations regarding the origins of the consignment, raising suspicions about their intent.
Following their apprehension, the individuals, along with the vehicles and the confiscated apples, were handed over to Customs officials in Pynursla. The Customs authorities are now conducting further investigations and legal actions against the individuals involved in this smuggling attempt, underscoring the ongoing efforts of security forces to combat cross-border illegal activities in the region.
