Meghalaya Government Delays Opening of PA Sangma International Medical College and Hospital
The Meghalaya government has directed the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) to postpone the inauguration of the PA Sangma International Medical College and Hospital until enabling legislation is put in place. This decision was announced by Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh following a cabinet meeting on Friday.
Minister Lyngdoh informed the media that the government must oversee several critical aspects related to the medical college, including seat allocation, tuition fees, and course offerings. “It is essential for us to establish a regulatory framework that ensures the quality and accessibility of medical education in our state,” she emphasized.
To address these concerns, the Health Department will be drafting legislation aimed at providing clear guidelines for medical colleges in Meghalaya. Lyngdoh stated that the proposed Act will focus on ensuring transparency and accountability in the operations of medical institutions within the state.
In a related development, USTM has already allocated 40 seats specifically for students from Meghalaya. The university has also requested a Rs 233 crore interest-free loan from the state government to support the establishment of the medical college. The government’s decision reflects its commitment to ensuring that medical education in Meghalaya is both effective and equitable, prioritizing the needs of local students.
