Ajit Kumar Bhuyan Appointed President of Asom Sonmilito Morcha Amidst Political Turmoil
Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan has been appointed as the new President of the Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASOM), as confirmed by sources following a press conference on Thursday. The announcement came after a meeting of the coalition, which also saw Jones Ingti Kathar and Suprakash Talukdar take on the roles of Executive Presidents.
In a significant development, the Communist Party of India (ML) has decided to field a candidate on behalf of ASOM for the Behali constituency in the upcoming by-polls.
During the press briefing, ASOM leaders emphasized their commitment to the coalition’s original objectives, stating, “We will not deviate from the objectives for which the Asom Sonmilito Morcha was formed. This coalition will continue.” They also expressed dissatisfaction with what they termed Congress’s betrayal, asserting that ASOM will thrive in Assam without the Congress party.
This leadership change follows the resignation of Bhupen Borah, who stepped down as President of ASOM on Wednesday, citing “tremendous pressure” and unresolved disputes regarding the candidacy for the Behali by-poll as the reasons for his departure. The transition in leadership reflects the ongoing political shifts and tensions within the opposition alliance in Assam.
