Akhil Gogoi Critiques Congress for “Historic Betrayal” in Behali Bypoll Candidate Selection
Raijor Dal President and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi launched a scathing attack on the Congress party on Thursday, labeling their decision to nominate Jayanta Borah as the candidate for the Behali constituency in the upcoming by-polls a “historic betrayal.” He accused Congress of stabbing its political allies, specifically the Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASOM), in the back.
The controversy ignited after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge approved Borah’s nomination late Wednesday, which some perceive as a significant breach of trust within the opposition alliance. Gogoi responded sharply, saying, “This is a historic betrayal by the Congress. They’ve done it before, and they’re doing it again.” He expressed frustration over Congress’s failure to adhere to a prior agreement that the candidate for Behali would come from the alliance, accusing Borah of still being aligned with the BJP.
Gogoi criticized Congress for their candidate selection, stating that Borah, a former BJP leader, could easily revert to his old party if elected. “In just one night, Congress handed a ticket to someone lacking loyalty to the party. This proves that Congress has no principles—only a blind hunger for power,” he asserted.
He further condemned Congress for what he called a betrayal not only of the 15 political parties involved in the alliance but also of the people of Assam. “At a time when the country is uniting to oust the communal BJP, Congress has chosen a candidate who once sought a BJP ticket. This shows a complete lack of love for Assam,” he declared.
Gogoi’s comments reflect deepening tensions within the opposition as the Behali bypoll approaches. He warned of potential consequences if Congress regained power, drawing parallels to the corrupt practices seen in 2011.
Additionally, he highlighted internal discord within Congress, pointing out the rivalry between Bhupen Bora and Gaurav Gogoi. “Gaurav seeks to oust Bhupen and consolidate power, while Bhupen’s camp wants to remain aligned with the opposition alliance,” he explained.
As the political landscape in Assam heats up, Gogoi’s remarks emphasize the challenges facing Congress and the broader opposition alliance in maintaining unity and integrity in their efforts against the BJP.
