Guwahati – The latest assessment by the Assam Pollution Control Board provides a detailed insight into the air quality and noise levels in Guwahati and surrounding districts following the recent Diwali celebrations.

Among the findings, Nagaon district has reported the highest Air Quality Index (AQI) at 222, categorized as “poor,” posing significant health risks for vulnerable populations, including individuals with asthma and heart conditions. Guwahati follows with an AQI of 186, while Nalbari records an AQI of 166, both classified as having “moderate” air quality.

In contrast, Sivasagar and Silchar have reported satisfactory air quality, with AQIs of 78 and 66, respectively. Notably, Guwahati’s current AQI reflects a slight improvement from last year, when it peaked at 234.

On the noise pollution front, the highest level recorded was 104 decibels in Ganeshguri, Guwahati, which remains below the Supreme Court’s limit of 120 decibels. Despite some advancements, the persistent noise pollution emphasizes the ongoing need for monitoring and raising community awareness.

The situation following Diwali serves as a reminder of the environmental challenges faced by Guwahati, highlighting how festive celebrations can significantly impact air quality. The initial report had indicated an AQI of 106, but the latest data from the Assam Pollution Control Board provides a more accurate reflection of the current environmental state.
