Guwahati Municipal Corporation Launches Clean-Up at Lachit Ghat Post-Kali Puja
Guwahati – November 2, 2024
In a significant clean-up initiative, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has commenced the removal of hundreds of discarded idols from Lachit Ghat this morning, following the conclusion of the Kali Puja festivities. The ghat had become cluttered with idols left by devotees, prompting public concerns about the cleanliness and environmental impact of the accumulation.
To address this issue, GMC deployed JCB machines to lift and transport the idols, which were subsequently taken to a designated dumping site in Bargaon, located in the Kamrup district. A dedicated team of GMC workers was present at the ghat early in the morning to oversee the cleanup operation, ensuring the area was restored to its original state.
This clean-up effort comes in response to recent news reports that highlighted the growing pile of discarded idols at Lachit Ghat, compelling city authorities to act swiftly. The GMC’s proactive measures reflect its commitment to maintaining the city’s hygiene and environmental standards, particularly in the aftermath of major religious celebrations.
