Jorhat MP Appeals to CM for Reconsideration of Proposed Flyover on AT Road
Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi has urged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to reconsider the proposed construction of an elevated flyover on AT Road, which is intended to connect Baruah Chariali with Bhogdoi Bridge. In a letter addressed to the CM, Gogoi expressed serious concerns about the potential social and economic impact of the project on the local community.
Highlighting the importance of the area, Gogoi noted that the stretch of AT Road earmarked for the flyover is a traditional hub of wholesale and retail markets. “This market supports the livelihoods of hundreds of shopkeepers who have contributed significantly to the local economy. Construction of a flyover here would inevitably lead to the displacement of these shopkeepers, resulting in loss of their business premises and consequently, their primary source of income,” he wrote.
The MP also pointed out that the flyover’s construction would disrupt the operations of numerous offices, both government and private, as well as places of worship located along the route. Post-construction, the road beneath the flyover is likely to face severe traffic congestion and operational challenges, adding to the inconvenience of the local population.
Gogoi stressed that while he supports infrastructural and developmental initiatives, such projects must prioritize the well-being of citizens. Drawing parallels to the government’s response to public concerns in Digholi Pukhuri, he criticized the perceived lack of acknowledgment of protests by Jorhat residents regarding the flyover.
“Repeated protests by the people of Jorhat regarding this flyover have been completely disregarded,” Gogoi stated. He emphasized the need for a pause in the project to allow for redesigning in consultation with community stakeholders to address their concerns.
The MP’s appeal underscores the delicate balance between development and preserving the livelihoods and traditions of local communities, a challenge faced by many infrastructure projects in urban and semi-urban regions.
