NHPC to Conduct Study for Renovation of Tripura’s Dumbur Hydroelectric Project
The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) will soon visit Tripura to conduct a study for the renovation and modernisation of the Dumbur hydroelectric project in Gomati district. An official confirmed that the NHPC has formed an expert panel to carry out the study.
The Dumbur hydroelectric plant, which had been generating around 5 MW of power, was forced to shut down after a devastating flood hit the facility in September, causing significant damage. The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) had requested NHPC’s assistance for the renovation of the project.
Biswajit Bose, Managing Director of TSECL, told PTI, “We have requested NHPC to send an expert team to push the renovation and modernisation of the Dumbur hydroelectric project. It is expected the NHPC team will arrive soon to do the job.”
To facilitate the renovation, NHPC will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and carry out a power potential study of the facility, which is critical for the state’s power generation. Bose emphasized the importance of the Dumbur hydroelectric plant, highlighting its low production cost compared to gas-based power plants in the region. The cost per unit of electricity from Dumbur stands at Rs 3.86, whereas gas-based plants produce electricity at approximately Rs 5.90 per unit.
The restoration of the Dumbur hydroelectric plant will be a significant step toward ensuring a more sustainable and cost-effective energy supply for Tripura.
