On November 27, Guwahati’s iconic Dighalipukhuri pond saw a major transformation as the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) cleared over 100 food stalls, including the popular Khao Gali, as part of a beautification initiative led by the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC). The move aims to restore the historic and aesthetic significance of the site, which is a cherished landmark in the city.
The eviction drive was prompted by a November 22 letter from Padmapani Bora, Secretary to the Tourism Department, who expressed concerns about the negative impact of makeshift stalls on the heritage site. The letter cited pollution, traffic congestion, and disruption of the site’s sanctity as reasons for the action. The ATDC also intends to enhance the pond’s boundary walls as part of a North Eastern Council (NEC) project, viewing the removal of vendors as crucial for smooth execution.
While some residents have welcomed the beautification initiative, it has also sparked criticism due to the impact on the livelihoods of the evicted vendors. Khao Gali, a hub of local food culture, had become a vibrant attraction, drawing both residents and tourists. Its closure has left vendors grappling with uncertainty, especially after they were previously displaced in October to accommodate the construction of the Dighalipukhuri-Noonmati flyover.
Bora’s correspondence with the GMC suggested exploring alternative spaces for the vendors, potentially in designated markets or zones. However, no relocation plans have been confirmed, leaving many small entrepreneurs in limbo. The lack of a clear rehabilitation strategy has raised concerns about the economic toll on these vendors, who play a significant role in Guwahati’s cultural landscape.
The incident highlights a broader challenge faced by rapidly modernizing cities: balancing heritage preservation and urban development with the livelihoods of local communities. As Guwahati continues its transformation, the city’s ability to uphold its cultural and economic inclusivity will be a key test of its progress.
