Contractor for Jorhat-Majuli Bridge Project to Be Replaced Amid Delays
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) has decided to replace the contractor for the Jorhat-Majuli bridge project in Assam, following months of stalled progress. The decision was made during a stakeholder meeting in New Delhi, prompted by the contractor’s failure to meet deadlines.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed that the selection process for a new contractor will begin immediately. In a statement shared on X, the CMO stated, “A meeting was held today at @MORTHIndia in New Delhi with all stakeholders regarding the construction of the bridge connecting Majuli and Jorhat.”
The ministry will forfeit the performance guarantee of the current contractor, UP State Bridge Corporation Limited, which abandoned the project site in September.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously raised concerns in a letter to Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, highlighting the urgency of the Rs 650 crore project. Sarma stressed the need to resume work promptly to meet the December 2025 completion target, citing the bridge’s importance for Majuli’s connectivity and economic development.
Awarded in August 2021, the two-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra River is a critical infrastructure project, linking Majuli on the north bank with Jorhat on the south bank. The replacement of the contractor aims to expedite construction and ensure the timely completion of this key initiative.
