Assam Government’s Beef Ban Decision Sparks Controversy

Aminul Islam, MLA from Mankachar, has strongly criticized the Assam government’s decision to ban beef consumption in hotels, restaurants, and community gatherings. Islam termed the decision as “an attack on secularism” and alleged that it unfairly targets the state’s Muslim community. He further stated that the decision is an attempt to polarize voters ahead of the elections.

Islam also accused Congress MP Rakibul Hussain and Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah of colluding with the BJP to create a “beef controversy.” He demanded answers from the Congress leaders, whose remarks reportedly prompted the ban. The move has sparked anger among locals, with many criticizing the government’s priorities.

One resident labeled the decision as “blatantly communal,” pointing out that the government has turned a blind eye to rampant drug trafficking in the state. Another local criticized the government’s priorities, stating that the cabinet lacks capable politicians who have failed to stop illegal cow syndicates. The controversy erupted after allegations that the BJP distributed beef during the byelection in the Muslim-majority Samaguri constituency.
