Former Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha Criticizes Party, Set to Join BJP
Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, the MLA from Assam’s Sribhumi constituency, announced his resignation from Congress, citing the party’s alleged disregard for Sanatan Dharma as his primary reason. Purkayastha, who confirmed his plans to officially join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) soon, launched a pointed critique of Congress, stating, “I cannot stay in a party that prioritizes the Mughals over the nation’s heritage.”
The former Congress leader thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for including two ministers from the Barak Valley in the state cabinet. Praising Sarma’s leadership, Purkayastha expressed optimism about Assam’s development under his guidance.
Purkayastha also supported the Assam government’s recent decision to ban beef consumption in public places, including hotels and restaurants. Dismissing protests against the decision, he said, “It’s a good decision, and I welcome it. This is India, and we must preserve the age-old cultures and traditions of the country. Those protesting should consider going to an Islamic country.”
While the exact date of his official induction into the BJP remains unconfirmed, Purkayastha has made it clear that his association with the saffron party is imminent.
His departure from Congress and alignment with BJP reflects a broader trend of shifting political affiliations in Assam, particularly among leaders aligning with BJP’s emphasis on cultural and religious nationalism.
