Margherita’s Century-Old Railway Market Raises Safety Concerns
The Margherita weekly market, a historic marketplace in the heart of the town, has become a growing safety hazard due to its location on both sides of active railway tracks. Originally held every Sunday, the market has evolved into a daily affair, increasing the risks associated with frequent train movements.
Despite the clear dangers posed by trains passing through the market every morning, neither the Margherita Municipal Board nor the railway authorities have taken steps to address the issue. The situation has sparked concerns among local residents, who have appealed to the authorities to relocate the market to a safer area.
Buyers and sellers continue their daily trade amidst the hazardous environment, maintaining a tradition that has existed for over a century. However, the heightened risk of accidents due to the market’s proximity to railway tracks has led to repeated calls for intervention.
Local traders and shopkeepers have joined the residents in urging the Margherita MLA, the Margherita Co-District authorities, and the railway department to take immediate action to ensure safety. “The inaction of authorities is putting lives at risk daily,” remarked a trader.
As the market remains operational in its current location, the danger persists, underscoring the urgent need for authorities to prioritize the safety of the community and relocate the historic market to a secure site.
