Desperate Plea: Assam Teachers on Hunger Strike for Survival

In a desperate plea for justice, members of the All Assam Non-Provincialised Teachers-Employees Association have embarked on an indefinite hunger strike at Chachal, Guwahati. The protest, which entered its second day today, has taken a critical turn as one of the teachers fell seriously ill due to starvation and exhaustion.

The teachers, who have been the backbone of Assam’s education system, particularly in rural and underserved areas, accuse the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government of betraying their trust. They claim that the government has systematically dismantled venture schools, a vital part of the state’s education infrastructure.

The teachers’ demands are straightforward: immediate dialogue with the Chief Minister and a clear roadmap for provincialization. They warn that if their demands remain unaddressed, the protests will escalate further. The Association has held the government responsible for any potential loss of life.

Despite repeated assurances from the government, including a promise from the Chief Minister in October 2022, the teachers allege that the government has backtracked on its commitments. The recent withdrawal of crucial provisions like midday meals and free textbooks from venture schools has further exacerbated the crisis.

The teachers’ protest highlights the stark reality of government apathy towards a crucial sector. The state government’s silence on this pressing issue raises serious concerns about its commitment to education and the well-being of its citizens.
