Assam Government Announces Revised Eligibility Criteria for Dr. Banikanta Kakati Merit Award Scheme

The Assam Government has unveiled updated eligibility guidelines for the Dr. Banikanta Kakati Merit Award (Scooter Distribution) scheme, a program designed to promote academic excellence among students in the state. The revised criteria aim to provide greater clarity and expand the scheme’s reach to deserving candidates, reflecting the government’s dedication to nurturing academic talent.

To qualify for the scheme in 2024, students must meet the following conditions:

Academic Performance: Male students are required to secure over 75% in their qualifying examinations, while female students need a minimum of 60% marks.

Residential Proof: Applicants must hold a Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) of Assam, confirming their residency in the state.

Education in Assam: Students pursuing their degrees in institutions located within Assam are eligible. However, the government has made an exception for those studying in premier institutions outside the state.

No Academic Gaps: Only students with uninterrupted academic progress are eligible. Those who took breaks for coaching or other reasons are not considered under the scheme.

Inclusion of National Institutions: For the first time, students from Assam who have secured admission to prestigious institutions outside the state—such as IITs, IIMs, IIITs, NITs, AIIMS, NIDs, and Central Universities—are now eligible for the award, provided they possess a valid PRC.

This inclusive update highlights the government’s recognition of the aspirations of Assam’s youth, whether they pursue higher education within the state or at renowned institutions across the country. By expanding the scheme’s scope, the initiative underscores a broader commitment to supporting academic achievement and fostering a culture of excellence.
