Meghalaya Police File Case Against Man for Alleged Religious Trespass in Mawlynnong Church
The East Khasi Hills Police in Meghalaya have registered a case against a man accused of trespassing into a church and performing acts that have allegedly hurt religious sentiments. The incident occurred on Thursday at the Mawlynnong village Church, where the individual, identified as Akash Sagar, reportedly entered the sacred premises without permission and sang “Jai Sri Ram” at the altar.
Following the incident, a case was lodged at the Pynursla police station, and authorities have initiated an investigation to apprehend the accused. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma condemned the act, calling it a deliberate attempt to disrupt the harmonious coexistence of diverse communities in the state. He reassured the public that the government is committed to taking strong measures to prevent such actions and to safeguard social, religious, and communal harmony.
The Meghalaya BJP unit also criticized the incident, denouncing Sagar’s behavior. Party spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang stated that the act of criminal trespass and desecration was deeply offensive and had the potential to hurt the sentiments of Christians, not just in Meghalaya but across India. The BJP emphasized that such actions were unacceptable and called for swift justice.
Social activist Angela Rangad lodged a formal police complaint on the same day, urging authorities to take legal action against Sagar. Rangad expressed concern over the incident’s implications for the community’s sense of security and religious respect.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for maintaining peace and mutual respect among different communities in Meghalaya, a state known for its cultural and religious diversity. As investigations proceed, the government and law enforcement agencies have assured citizens of their commitment to ensuring justice and upholding communal harmony.
