Assam Municipal election 2022 result: BJP leads in 548 wards, Congress in 61

Counting of votes for the recently concluded Assam Municipal Board elections is presently underway. Voting was held for 920 wards in 80 municipal boards last week, while candidates of 57 wards were declared uncontested. According to officials, a total of 2,532 candidates were in the fray.

The BJP is now leading in 548 wards, while the Congress leads in 61 wards and other parties in 125.

For the first time in the history of the state, electronic voting machines (EVM) were used instead of ballot paper for civic elections in Assam. After polls closed, the EVMs had been safely shifted to strong rooms in the district and sub-divisional headquarters. In a statement on Sunday evening the State Election Commission said that no untoward incident was reported, and no request for re-poll from any part of the state had been received.

The number of eligible voters was 16,73,899, comprising 8,41,534 women and 17 transgenders. According to reports, the ruling BJP had fielded 825 nominees, while at least 706 candidates contested on Congress tickets and the the Asom Gana Parishad nominated 243 hopefuls. According to the SEC, the overall tentative poll percentage till 8 pm on Sunday was 70%.
