Attempt to Split Land Leads to Fight at Assam-Arunachal Border

Guwahati: The situation at the border between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh became tense after a verbal altercation broke out between inhabitants of the Kolapothar area of Tinsukia.

According to reports, a team of Arunachal Pradesh administrative officials arrived in the Kolapothar region on Thursday evening and made an attempt to split the territory between the two states.

The locals were outraged as a result. The Kolapothar community and the Arunachal government got into a verbal altercation.

As of late, representatives from the Tinsukia administration arrived and took control of the situation.

Importantly, Kolapothar is a border region where people have lived as Assamese citizens for the past 40 years.

Following the incident on Thursday, the locals said that they would cede their property to Arunachal if the region’s borders were formally established by the government. The inhabitants also said that if the government did not draw borders, fighting amongst those living in these regions would persist.

Officials from the two states have been holding important discussions for a very long time in an effort to resolve the ongoing border dispute between them.

The regional committees of the two states had a significant gathering in January of this year in Guwahati. The regional committees completed the report to be delivered to the Center as a result of the conference. 57 contested settlements in the surrounding areas have been the subject of discussions.

Jayanta Mallabaruah claimed that the negotiations were 95% successful, and they were able to finish the proposal that would be presented to the chief ministers of both states.

It should be noted that the two states share a boundary that is 804.1 km long. Arunachal Pradesh, which became a union territory in 1972, has a complaint that Assam was arbitrarily given control over a number of forested tracts on the lowlands that had historically belonged to hill tribal chiefs and clans.
