M’laya To Get Electric Trains For First Time
Guwahati: The state of Meghalaya will operate electric trains for the first time, providing a significant boost to railroad connectivity in Northeast India.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NRF) reached the milestone by commissioning a 22.823 track kilometre single-line segment of the Dudhnai-Mendipathar and a 34.59 track kilometre double-line section between Abhayapuri and Pancharatna on March 15.
The electrification work of these parts was done by the Central Organization for Railway Electrification (CORE).
According to a statement from the Railways, Mendipathar is currently the sole station in the northeastern state of Meghalaya that has been open since the prime minister’s inauguration in 2014.
After the commissioning of electric traction, trains drawn by electric locomotive would be able to run directly from Mendipathar in Meghalaya, increasing the average speed.
More trains carrying passengers and cargo will be able to go through these sections at their top sectional speeds. This portion will also be more punctual. Electric locomotive-powered parcel and freight trains from other states would be able to travel directly to Meghalaya.
According to a statement from the railroads, electrification will greatly increase train mobility in Northeast India. By switching from fossil fuels to electricity, pollution will be reduced, and the region’s railway system will operate more effectively. Along with streamlining traffic and saving trains travelling to and from northeastern states time, this would also help save crucial foreign currency.
