BJP MLA Biswabandhu Sen Elected as Tripura’s Assembly speaker
Guwahati: Former Deputy Speaker and BJP-IPFT candidate, Biswabandhu Sen on March 24, won the election for speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly.
Sen received 32 votes, and Gopal Chandra Roy, the leader of the Congress, received 14 votes in the poll, which took place on March 24 — the first day of the state Assembly session following the inauguration of the new administration earlier in the month.
The 69-year-old Sen was with Congress before switching to BJP in 2017.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha congratulated Sen on being elected as speaker of the Assembly and added, ”I believe, the glory of the House will reach new heights under his able leadership”.
Sen was the speaker candidate put out by the saffron, whilst Gopal Chandra Roy was the combined candidate of the Congress and the Marxist Party.
“My party leaders have chosen my name and I have no doubt about my victory as we are the ruling party in the Assembly,” Sen said.
The BJP-IPFT coalition has 33 seats, while the opposition Congress and CPI(M) have 14 seats combined in the 60-member Tripura Legislature.
On the other hand, Tipra Motha has 13 MLAs.
