Farmers in Morigaon Experience Crop Losses Due To Rain; They Request Govt Aid

Guwahati: Farmers in the Morigaon district who obtained a loan from a bank for the purpose of growing watermelon sustained significant losses as storms tore through sections of Assam.

The farmers have therefore requested the state government to step in and assist their families.

A 35-year-old farmer named Pranab Sarkar claimed that due to the significant loss of his crops from rain and storms, he is currently unable to repay the bank for the loan he took out to grow watermelons.

“I had taken loan of Rs 2-3 lakh from bank to cultivate watermelon in my 25 bighas of land. But recent hailstorm, rain destroyed my watermelon cultivation. I am now facing massive problems. I don’t know how I will repay my bank loan. There are 14 persons in our family and the main income source of our family is cultivation,” he said.

Sarkar went on to say that the Mayong area is frequently hit by flooding and that as a result, there are numerous issues there.

“I appeal to the government to help us,” he said.

Due to recent hailstorms, flooding, and rain, numerous other farmers in the area are also experiencing similar issues.

Another farmer from the Mayong area, Krishna Biswas, claimed that hail and rain have ruined his green chilli growing.

“For my cultivation, I had taken a loan of Rs 50,000 from the bank. But the recent rain, and hailstorm destroyed my chilli farming. We have now no other option. I have no idea, how I will repay my loan amount,” Krishna Biswas said.
