Unruly Mob Sets Ablaze CM’s Event Venue To Protest Eviction Drive In Manipur
Guwahati: Tension is high in the Churachandpur district of Manipur before Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s visit on Friday.
According to reports, a bunch of rowdy people damaged the location of CM Singh’s event in opposition to a state government-led eviction effort. The incident happened in the district’s New Lamka area where the programme is supposed to be held.
The local police arrived on the scene right away and were able to control the mob’s damage. The protesters set fire to about 100 chairs at the event, and they also partially burned the freshly erected open gym at the PT Sports facility. The Chief Minister was scheduled to open this gym during his stay.
The incident took place in the middle of a shutdown that the Indigenous Tribe Leaders Forum had called for, demanding a complete shutdown of Churachandpur from 8 am to 4 pm.
The forum claims that the state administration is not doing enough to remove farmers and other tribal settlers from protected forestry areas. They assert that the government has not demonstrated any sign of seriousness or commitment to solve the suffering of the people.
The Chief Minister will also be present at another event at Sadbhavna Mandap that is being hosted by a local. The situation continues to be difficult as the authorities try to guarantee that everyone involved is safe.
